CHAPTER TEN:

‘Past Insights’

January the 15th, 2285: [1:04PM]

Proteus Hand drew up a seat from the conference table; a large, ugly looking piece of furniture that’s only purpose was to intimidate the guests in the Sypharium Kremlin Building. His face remained impassive, but inside, his stomach was churning; every inch of his body dreading what was coming next.

There was a badly oiled sliding sound as the door opened, and three men entered the room; All dressed in Sypharium formal dress, two with the stripes of a Sypharium Marshal, and one with the stripe of a General.

Proteus glanced up at the room’s newer occupants, his eyes sweeping across Marshals Huszar and Lehane, coming to a stop to rest on the third man, who was refusing to meet his eye, keeping his head bowed down as if ashamed of some unknown crime.

Mistakenly thinking that Proteus had looked away, the Man raised his head, his eyes momentarily locking into a deep gaze with his brother. Romulus Hand looked back down at his hands, and waited for Marshal Huszar to begin.

January the 15th, 2285: [3:00PM]

Proteus had angrily stormed from the meeting, his shocked mind still reeling with the weight of what he had been told to do.

Amoret rose gracefully from the chair outside the conference room, where she had been sitting loyally for the past two hours.

Without the slightest hint of worry or anger, she looked into his light grey eyes and kissed him on the lips.

Proteus could feel Romulus’ acidic gaze on the back of his neck as the two exited the building, into a waiting transport that began to lift off the instant it’s passengers were seated.

As Badnarik became just a cluster of far away lights, Amoret turned to him expectantly.

‘Well?’

Proteus shook his head distractedly. ‘They want me to defect. And Romulus pretty much wants my head on a plate.’

Amoret hissed like a wounded animal, Proteus’ statement bringing back private and angry memories.

‘We need to report back to Archie.’ Proteus firmly stated, reminded that despite blood ties, it was time for him to return to The Woofer, as Proteus Herbst.
